A storytelling project by Susannah “Susie” Butler

Your story is worth remembering.

Susie is interviewing older adults about their lives and preserving their stories in a book called Lessons of a Lifetime.

You review and approve your story before anything is shared.

“Everyone has a story that can teach, encourage, or surprise someone younger.”

One conversation can preserve a lifetime of wisdom.

You don’t need to prepare a speech or decide which memory matters most. Susie uses open-ended questions to guide a relaxed conversation about your life—where you came from, the experiences that shaped you, the people you remember, and what you learned along the way.

01

A relaxed conversation

Susie asks warm, open-ended questions and follows what matters to you.

02

Your choices, always

Skip any question, share as much or as little as you wish, and choose whether your name appears.

03

A story you approve

Your interview becomes a written story that you can review before it is considered for the collection.

Personal, comfortable, and in person.

Interviews are normally held face to face at a comfortable, mutually agreed location. In-person conversation is at the heart of this project.

If you live out of state—or circumstances make meeting in person impractical—remote interview exceptions may be arranged.

  1. Get in touch.Tell Susie a little about yourself or someone you would like to recommend.
  2. Choose a comfortable time and place.A family member or trusted person is welcome to join.
  3. Have a conversation. There are no right answers and no need to prepare.
  4. Review your story.Nothing is included or shared without your permission.

You stay in control.

A few things people often ask.

Who can participate?

The project is inviting older adults who would like to preserve the story of their lives and the experiences that shaped them. Family members, caregivers, and community leaders may also recommend someone.

Do I need to prepare anything?

Not at all. Susie will guide the conversation with open-ended questions. You choose what to share, skip anything you prefer not to discuss, and let the story unfold naturally.

Will my name be published?

Only if you want it to be. You may use a first name, a different name, or remain anonymous.

Are interviews recorded?

Recording and note-taking arrangements will be discussed with you beforehand. Susie will only use a recording with your permission.

Can the interview happen remotely?

Interviews are intended to be in person. Exceptions can be made for out-of-state residents or when meeting face to face is not practical.
